One Crazy Year Spent In Brazil

What is going to happen now?

A year has past and now we stand on the brink, of returning to a world where we are surrounded by the paradox of everything and yet nothing being the same.
In a couple of weeks we will reluctantly give our hugs and, fighting the tears,we will say goodbye to people who were once just names on a sheet of paper to return to people that we hugged and fought tears to say goodbye to before we ever left.
We will leave our best friends to return to our best friends.
We will go back to the places we came from, and go back to the same things we did last summer and every summer before.
We will come into town on that same familiar road, and even though it has been months, it will seem like only yesterday.
As you walk into your old bedroom, every emotion will pass through you as you reflect on the way your life has changed and the person you have become.
You suddenly realize that the things that were most important to you a year ago don’t seem to matter so much anymore, and the things you hold highest now, no one at home will completely understand.
Who will you call first?
What will you do your first weekend home with your friends?
Where are you going to work?
Who will be at the party Saturday night?
What has everyone been up to in the past few months?
Who from school will you keep in touch with?
How long before you actually start missing people barging in without calling or knocking?
Then you start to realize how much things have changed, and you realize the hardest part of being an exchange student is balancing the two completely different worlds you now live in, trying desperately to hold on to everything all the while trying to figure out what you have to leave behind.
We now know the meaning of true friendship.
We know who we have kept in touch with over the past year and who we hold dearest to our hearts.
We’ve left our worlds to deal with the real world.
We’ve had our hearts broken, we’ve fell in love, we’ve helped our best friends overcome eating disorders, depression, stress, and death.
We’ve lit candles at the grotto and we’ve stayed up all night on the phone just to talk to a friend in need.
There have been times when we’ve felt so helpless being hours away from home when we know our families or friends needed us the most, and there are times when we know we have made a difference.
Just weeks from now we will leave.
Just weeks from now we take down our pictures, and pack up our clothes.
No more going next door to do nothing for hours on end.
We will leave our friends whose random e-mails and phone calls will bring us to laughter and tears this summer, and hopefully years to come.
We will take our memories and dreams and put them away for now, saving them for our return to this world.Just weeks from now we will arrive.
Just weeks from now we will unpack our bags and have dinner with our families.
We will drive over to our best friend’s house and do nothing for hours on end.We will return to the same friends whose random emails and phone calls have brought us to laughter and tears over the year.
We will unpack old dreams and memories that have been put away for the past year.
In just weeks we will dig deep inside to find the strength and conviction to adjust to change and still keep each other close.
And somehow, in some way, we will find our place between these two worlds. In just weeks.

Nordest!

I have just spent one of the greatest month of my life traveling the northeast of Brazil with 100 other exchange students having the time of out lives!

We started out in the city Brasília where we toured the capital if the country. We stopped at a few city’s on the way to Maceio were we went snorkeling in caves, Zip lining, Hiking in caves and to the top of mountains having some the most breath taking views I have seen in my like! When arriving in Maceio out first beach city we spent an awesome 3 days there then moving on to on to Natal a place with spectacular beaches! Natal we were able to go on the dune bugging and the most north we would go. We hit many other cities soaking up lots and lots of sun Learning about Brazil and having the time of our lives! One place we stopped at one spectacular city with the name of Rio de Janeiro. In Rio I was able to take part in the favela tour which I learnt a lot about how they work and how people live, To be honest it was not as bad as I thought it would be a owner would own the bottom house of the “apartment” and if it was able he would sell his roof for someone else to built on top of that and so on. (The favelas in Rio are not as bad a many) We also went to see Christo Redeemer & Pão do asugar which both were absolutely breathtaking!

The tip was over in a blink of an eye before I knew it is was back home and now going back to school getting back it to the shape of things! It is crazy how fast the time goes! I mean I have already been here 6 months?!

Áte Mais Tchau!

Footprints in the sand

I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas and the New Year will bring in Happiness, Peace and Love for everyone! 2011 was one amazing year I hope 2012 will be the same!

I spent my Christmas in the city named Joinville. My Christmas was not a huge difference from what I have back home. I liked the Christmas dinner consisted of a small amount of meat and rice with LOTS of fruit! It was very yummy! J

Today my family and I went to a near by city to Joinville named Itapema. It is a really nice city with a very beautiful beach. We spent the day along the beach just relaxing! It was a very nice day out as it was overcast making it not hot but not cold. I really enjoyed it! I will go home to Sorocaba tomorrow and then I will be off to a farm with my last host family for New Years.

HAPPY NEW YEARS YOU ALL OF YOU

4 months

Holly it has been 4 months already?!

The weekend was a very busy one packed full! Went out Friday night to the graduation of my school they had an awesome DJ I had lots of fun there. Saturday we had an exchange student Christmas party were we had to make food from your country so I and the other Canadians made pancakes. It is a blast hanging out with all the other exchange students! Sunday one of the other exchangers held a BBQ at her house for all the exchange students so the ones who came from out of town could stay one more day and so we could all just hang out and chill. The day consisted of chilling by the pool it was a blast. Later Sunday night I changed my family. My new family are awesome they are so welcoming and I am already considered their daughter. We will go away to my aunts house for Christmas sounds like it will be a very nice time I cant wait to get to know them more.

For all the goo times to come

Till next time

~Soccer

The other day was the match of corinthians vs palmeiras (two very popular teams) and as many of you might not know Brazilians are VERY serious with their soccer more than (from what I know) Canadians and their Hockey We watch the hockey on TV if we happen to be watching TV at the time with a beer in you hard and some munchies in front of you chilling having a nice calm evening… Not so much here during a soccer game you don’t go to get up to the fridge during the dame (half time yes) and if corinthians would win they would be the champion is was quite a tense game watching it at a friends house with her family they would be screaming and yelling at the TV (I had to laugh a bit it was kind of funny) They sure like their soccer. In the end corinthians won making them champions… they are a very popular team so the cars were honking their horns, firecrackers were going off, people were yelling down the street (almost kayos) It was fun tho it is very neat to see how much they really love their soccer!

Also it is one month till my north east trip were I will spend about the month of january on the beach (how nice) If you would like to take a look at what the trip will look like here: http://www.terrabrasil.com/inter_programa.php?lang=ZW4=&id=Mg==

& What not

Summer Holidays in December <3

Last week I went with my school on a “field trip” to Floresta Nacional de Ipanema (a national park) , It was a super nice pace with big forests and such. We went on a nice long hike in the forest it was super hot out! A little to hot for me that’s for sure! It was really fun climbing on the rocks and hiking in the forest, saw some pretty wicked bugs! I dont mind the cold weather back home as in that results in little to none insets and snakes and what not the hot weather brings.

And the other day I was able to go to Santos SP And get a chance to go to the ocean, It was my first time to touch the Atlantic ocean. The beach was huge room for lots and lots of people, there were very few people as it was a cloudy/rainy day But we got a good solid hour of sun on the beach. The water was not a clear as I remember the ocean in Australia anyways it was a blast! After about an hour the sky opened up and it down poured tons of rain it sure didn’t bother me or Kailee (American exchange student) so we were dancing, singing in the ocean in the rain having a blast it was awesome I had an awesome time! Later we went to shopping and I bought myself the jersey of the Santos soccer team Santos with the #1 player’s number 11… Naymaer! I had an awesome day and I can’t wait till my Nordest trip in January and to be living on the beach!

Well till next time.

Wild monkeys?

Spent the weekend out of the city, what I nice thing to do!

Thursday after school my Mom, Dad, American exchange student and I headed out of the city off to Paraìso do Norte a long 7 hour drive Friday was spent lazying around the farm soaking up some Z’s in the hammock. I was able to see my second firefly in my life (I had seen one the last time I was at this farm)… What a pretty awesome bug!  Friday was for sure a blast sliding down a waterfall, feeding sheep, walking in the “Jungle”, seeing a wild monkey, and just making memories basking in the sun! But the problem with basking in all this sun without re-applying sunblock… Results in a narly burn! it was a long drive sitting in the car home! Last night I was really cold as it was 20C and then I look to see back home it was -20C… I felt a little guilty haha! Things this week will be pretty chill as everyone is wrapping things at school with lots of exams.

Till next time,

Catherine

101 Days in Brazil

Today was my 101st day in Brazil… THATS CRAZY!

I have been really busy and haven’t had the time to write in here fro a while. The time has just flown by it really seems like yesterday I walked off the plane. What has been happening here on the southern side of the equator?

I have been to a few birthday parties, One that I went to had some really cool contraptions that you would never see in Canada, There was I huge blow up slide and they covered it in soap and water (there were a few bruises from that) and there was also this other thing to play soccer or I don’t even know where to begin to explain it but I was very bruised from that!

I went to a concert, which was quite the experience I was able to meet the singer which was really cool!

One thing my sister did was order McDonalds take out as here you can get it delivered I did not believe her so she had to show me it was true and it is true! I have taken lots of pictures,

Gone to lots of BBQ’s,

I went to a halloween party it was more a harry potter party it was really cool I met another american exchange student she will be going home soon tho as she is with another program.

I miss my horse,

I am still extremely pasty white (I get called “Gringa” a lot meaning white girl),

Eaten lots of amazing fruit,

been cold when it is 20C out,

I also spend lots of time at this country club like place named clube do campo it is super nice it has a work out area and multiple pools and two big water slides they are always fun to play on I don’t mind wasting some days away by the pool I think there is going to be the summer hang out,

I have had lots of random conversations with people some turning out super hilarious or weird as some things get lost in my translation,

Portuguese still is a pain in the neck but it is coming bit by bit,

I miss my wide-open spaces,

I will be on my summer holiday starting tomorrow till February,

January I will take a big trip to the Northeast (Beach country) that is the area where everyone has the image on Brazil it should be an amazing trip!

Brazilians are crazy people,

You dress up to go to the mall,

You can never be over dressed only underdressed,

I eat rice and beans everyday,

To buy clothing here is quite expensive, Perfumes on the other hard are very cheap compared to Canada

The Gum here is very disgusting I miss my Canadian gums

You eat a lot here, Breakfast is small, Lunch is big, You have a snack around 5pm then around 9 - 10pm you eat dinner which sometimes is big sometimes not (that my family seems to be like anyways)

The school is a lot more clique compared to mine back home

I went to São Paulo the other day agin fro a BBQ with family friends it was really fun! I like sea food now?

I will miss all the hugs and kisses you get when you meet people when I go home for sure!I met a couple who are travelling Brazil (Rotarians) from the states and not for them to go to give a hug was not weird for me. Ha!

I will go to my family farm yet again this weekend for my grandmom’s Birthday

I have nothing more to say. I am having lots of fun and I have nothing more to say! I will post some pictures of my weekend at the farm and will try to wirte about it also! Till then

Tchau!

Kisses :x (Yes they even send virtual hugs and kisses here)
